The Maison Teranga Signature Aesthetic

We always adapt to our clients’ needs and preferences. At the same time, we have our own unique signature aesthetic, inspired by traditional Provençal elements and the joie de vivre of the Côte d’Azur. We create beautifully balanced, harmonious spaces that make the heart beat a little faster — or, as the French say, create a coup de cœurOur designs are timeless, with a contemporary yet classic feel. We like to be playful, while still keeping clean lines and a sense of calm. Our eco-friendly approach is reflected in every choice we make, celebrating the Mediterranean way of living.

Wherever possible the raw materials we use are non-toxic, clean and traditional. Using limewash plaster, caséine paint and natural pigments, oils & waxes lends a beautiful finish to our interiors.

Our colour schemes reflect our surroundings as we embrace the earthy pastels of medieval Provençal villages, the blues of the Cote d’Azur and the endless greens of the Massif des Maures.

We work with talented local artisans such as carpenters, ironmongers, ceramists and painters and we scour brocante markets far & wide to find things we love.

Our aesthetic includes heirloom furniture, eclectic accessories, pre-loved items, natural textiles, curated art & wonderful everyday objects, creating interiors of timeless beauty, exuding warmth & personality. Some of our favourite items include blankets, cacti, seashells, raw linen, bamboo & hemp.

Sustainable Interior Design

What does Sustainable Interior Design mean?

Imagine walking into a room that feels like a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. That’s the essence of sustainable interior design. It’s all about creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also kind to our planet and to you. In a world grappling with climate change, over-consumption and resource depletion, every choice matters. Sustainable interior design offers a way to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and create healthier living environments. This design philosophy marries aesthetics and functionality with environmental responsibility, focusing on minimising ecological impact and improving the health and comfort of the space’s occupants.

All materials used are carefully sourced to have minimal negative impact on our environment. They’re durable and of classic beauty so they age well. This approach considers the entire lifecycle of items and includes the use of pre-loved, vintage and heirloom furniture, accessories and textiles.  We love us ing  artisan products made from

renewable, recyclable and biodegradable materials that support individuals who dedicated themselves to producing amazing handmade products for their community. Reclaimed building materials such as beams, tiles and bricks and eco-friendly, non-toxic natural paints such as limewash, milk paint, waxes and oils are also great options.

Put simply, for us, sustainable interior styling is about more than considering how the final space appears. We also care deeply about the materials being used to make it look the way it does and the impact this has on our planet. The end results are healthy, beautiful and timeless interiors, full of meaning and wonderful to live in.

Why is Sustainable Interior Design important?

For most people, home is where you come to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour but do our interiors ignore the signs of the times? It’s important to understand the role of sustainability in interior design.

In the quest for a greener planet, instead of adding to the problem, it can be part of the solution. It’s not just a trend for headlines in glossy magazines. In our view it should become as commonplace as the shift towards alternative energy or organic agriculture. It’s a way of transforming spaces while contributing to a more balanced and harmonious future where beauty, comfort, luxury, quality, and planet preservation go hand in hand.

This concept needs to accessible to all areas of society and must not be solely achievable by the more affluent. Through our blog we’ll share tips on how to live in environmentally conscious spaces in an affordable way.

Sustainable Design is guided by the idea that it’s not necessary to sacrifice human comfort, aesthetic sense, and beauty to ensure that a space is eco-friendly and efficient. On the contrary, when done with integrity, green homes can reach heightened levels of sophisticated beauty.

How to achieve Green Interiors?

Sustainable, Green Interiors imply an ethical and ecological awareness of using natural materials, construction techniques, and being energy-efficient. It’s the art of crafting spaces that prioritise using eco-friendly materials as well as minimising our environmental footprint. Therefore, it’s important to highlight some key characteristics of sustainable interior design:

Use of sustainable materials

Use of recycled items and materials

Use of non-toxic materials such as natural paints and waxes

Energy efficiency

Water efficiency

Waste reduction

Improvement of indoor air quality

User-focused design

Intelligent use of spaces

Embracing Eco-Friendly Materials

Here are some of the superheroes of sustainability, each with its own story of environmental stewardship:

Bamboo – Fast-growing and fiercely durable, bamboo is a champion of eco-friendly materials, perfect for flooring, furniture, and even textiles.

Clay (including terra cotta and bricks) – As an abundant and natural material, clay is sustainable. For centuries people have used it for construction purposes. Clay is easy to excavate, requiring very little processing. It’s a renewable natural resource that does not require intensive processing or transportation as it can be sourced locally and used with minimal waste and energy consumption.

Cork – Harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming the tree, cork is making a comeback in flooring and wall coverings.

Hemp is naturally one of the most sustainable fibres that can be grown. It is fast-growing, has a high yield, producing up to 250% more fibre than cotton and requires less land to grow, requires no harmful pesticides or chemicals, and uses between a quarter to a third of the water used by conventional cotton cultivation.

Linen – Once the flax fibres have been spun and woven into linen fabric, the environmental benefits keep on coming! Linen is naturally biodegradable. This means there’s less waste and it does less damage to ecosystems at the end of its life cycle. And it’s extremely hardwearing, so less waste.

Non-toxic paints (limewash paint, milk paint etc) – These are paints made from natural raw materials such as water, plant oils and resins, plant dyes, and essential oils; natural minerals such as clay, chalk, and talcum; and milk casein, natural latex, beeswax, earth, and mineral dyes. Water-based natural paints are virtually odourless.

Organic cotton manages to keep its carbon footprint small because it doesn’t require any pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers (the production of these chemicals is extremely carbon-intensive).

Recycled Glass reduces associated air pollution by 20% and related water pollution by 50%. Recycling glass reduces the amount of landfill that would otherwise be taken up by used bottles and jars.

Other options include: Ashcrete, Cob, Enviroboard, Ferrock, Hempcrete, Newspaperwood, Non-Toxic Oils and Waxes, Mycelicum, Recycled Metal, Straw Bales, Timbercrete, Sheep’s Wool,

Sourcing heirloom, vintage & pre-loved furniture and accessories

It might surprise you to know that of 11m tonnes of furniture waste generated in the EU each year only 10% is recycled. The rest goes into landfill! As lovers of heirloom, vintage and pre-loved furniture & accessories, we know that what we find in the Brocante (flea market) is generally better quality than most of what’s available online these days. These numbers make our eyes water…the resources we waste to keep our ‘fake economy’ going!

Reclaimed Building Materials

Using antique and reclaimed wood & materials for furniture and finishes prevents further deforestation of the world’s most precious woodland ecosystems. Giving older natural materials a second life in design also reduces waste and decreases the amount of carbon dioxide released from timber extraction and transportation. Other reclaimed building materials include bricks, nails, tiles, stone and marble. Whether it dates back to 1980 or 1880 it’s a great feeling to reuse or repurpose something with history. Items that have had one or more previous lives are full of character, often hand-made and of excellent quality. Saving them from the landfill is heroic and they love you back and make your spaces look amazing. It’s a win-win!
